Service Description

At LaurieChapmanMFT, I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as a primary method of treating trauma, addiction, mood disorders, phobias, and eating issues. This is an evidence-based approach developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro to help people process traumatic experiences and distressing memories. It is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and other emotional difficulties rooted in past experiences. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess memories that have become “stuck” due to overwhelming emotional impact. There is a growing body of research on its effectiveness with addiction, phobias, OCD, mood disorders, sleep issues, grief and loss, pain and other issues that are trapped in the neural networks of the brain. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require extensive discussion or reliving of painful details. Instead, it focuses on facilitating the brain’s innate healing capacity. Over the course of treatment, clients often experience a significant reduction in emotional intensity, negative beliefs, and physical sensations related to whatever issues are being focused upon. EMDR has been endorsed by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychological Association (APA) as an effective treatment. EMDR 2.0 represents the next evolution of this therapeutic model. Developed by EMDR researchers and clinicians, this updated approach integrates new findings from neuroscience and clinical practice to enhance the speed and effectiveness of reprocessing. EMDR 2.0 uses more active and engaging techniques, incorporating faster-paced bilateral stimulation, increased variation in tasks, and the use of dual attention elements to keep clients optimally engaged during sessions. This version also places greater emphasis on flexibility, creativity, and responsiveness to the client’s nervous system in the moment. EMDR 2.0 can accelerate processing and often achieve significant results in fewer sessions. It is particularly suited for clients ready for a more intensive approach.
